Construction of ski helmet

Ski helmets and snowboard helmets are distinguished by two types of construction:

In-Mold: Inner and outer shells are formed and fused in the same production step. With this method, a high stability with low weight can be produced. Due to the fusion of the two layers and the resulting lower cross-section, the insulation properties of these helmets are not as good as with the hard shell process. The in-mold helmets are therefore something for our 'hotheads'.

Hard Shell: In this manufacturing process, the inner and outer shells are produced separately and then glued. Thanks to the two-stage production, a ventilation system can be installed between the layers. Helmets of the Hard Shell process not only insulate better at cold temperatures, but also have the possibility, if it gets a little warmer due to the sun, to provide the driver with a cool breeze. All-weather skiers therefore opt for a ski helmet from the hard shell process.

Determine ski helmet size – measure head circumference correctly

The sizes of all helmets are based on the head circumference. Which means that they have to measure their head circumference before buying in order to be able to buy their perfectly fitting ski helmet.

There are two variants:

• Measure head circumference with measuring tape: Take a common, flexible measuring tape and attach it to the back of the head. Now lead it along your ears and hold it together about one to two centimeters above your eyebrows. In the neck area it must not fall down and on the forehead it should not sit too far up. Only in this way can the widest point of the head be measured. The tape may be slightly tightened, but should not be too tight. Now the head size can be easily read on the tape measure.

• Measure circumference with string: Alternatively, take a commercially available cord and put it on in the same way. After that, they can determine the length of the head circumference by measuring the length of the cord with a scale.

How does the ski helmet fit ideally?

Pay attention to the following points

• The leading edge of the helmet should finish 1-2cm above the eyebrows.
• The helmet must not sit crooked and should not be able to slip into the neck.
• The helmet must be tightened in such a way that the scalp moves with the helmet but no pressure points form.
• The helmet must not twist on the head.
• The strap should lie with the closure under the chin but must not press against the throat. Put on the strap until the helmet can no longer slip. One to two fingers wide should still be between the closure and the chin.
• The helmet should fit so well that it does not fall off the head with an open closure when you front and shake it. Have your hands ready to catch the helmet if it falls.

Tip: Yawning should be possible unhindered – but the strap on the helmet must not be able to be pulled up to the mouth.
