buy Children Bike – the consultant tips for children's bicycles
If you want to buy a Children Bike – you want to do something good for your gifted child. And you do the same if you follow the following tips.
How fast is your offspring growing?
In order to give you an overview of how "fast your child grows – we show you on the basis of this table – between 4-12 years, the children grow the least on average – all the more important is the perfect choice of the children's bike, because otherwise it can take a long time for your child to enjoy the "too big" bike.
Why is the right Children Bike so crucial?
We simply assume that if you have read this far, it is very important to you to give your child the right children's bike. The most ideal condition is the start with about 2.5 years with a Balance Bike and even better with 1.5 years with a small slide. We recommend to change to the Children Bike when the balance has already been learned and thus the training wheels are superfluous (more on that later...). The balance is learned with the Balance Bike in no time and is an important step forward for your child. Because the earlier you start to learn the balance, the safer your darling will master the way to school later. To be safer on the streets gives parents a good feeling – but also us! And another big advantage is the Balance Bike ride for kids – you can park your feet faster, because the Balance Bike has exactly the property of moving forward with your feet. This reduces the risk of falling. With the Balance Bike , you will already learn a lot that your child will need when cycling, namely:
- Balance
- Estimating distances and speed
- Handling brakes
- Coordination and responsiveness
A too large or small Children Bike is no joy and over- or under-challenges the offspring, which can lead to losing interest in cycling. And here we approach the central question:
How do I determine the appropriate size of the children's bike?
The most important thing in advance – if you are looking for the perfectly fitting Children Bike – it is essential that you know the stride length of your child. Of course, the age and size also give an indication to limit the search of the children's home. Especially the age indication is so different for the children as well as for us adults. So we can only fall back on average values based on age and give recommendations, which is of course difficult. Even the body size does not yet tell us how the relationship between the upper body and legs is stored. Fortunately, the kids are also very different. For some, the legs are longer and for others they are not.
Therefore, please take the time and measure the stride length with simple means. You need a not too thick book (or something comparable) and a (construction) meter – that's all:
- 1. Position the child without shoes on a wall standing upright (knee stretched)
- 2. Now give your child the book between the legs (so that he does not press)
- 3. Measure with the meter from the ground to the book edge end
- And you have the stride length. What to do with it you will learn in the next section.
Children Bike buy with the customs indication - and it fits?
Unfortunately not! Because the customs indication refers only to the wheel size of the children's bike and does not say anything about the entry height of the frame, saddle height and the required stride length, so that the bike fits perfectly. In order to give you an overview of the customs sizes, we have created a list for you.
- 12 inch children's bikes are suitable for the entry into the biker career
- 14 inch children's bikes are a niche and are therefore almost nowhere to be found and from very few manufacturers (therefore, the range is quite small - but the Royal Baby Bikes are a real eye-catcher!)
- 16 inch children's bikes are usually available for kids from about 4 years and, like the two previous sizes, are usually still equipped with a gear and withdrawal (an exception is e.B. the LIKEtoBIKE 16 inch, which is available either with resignation, but also with two rim brakes or even with an automatic 2 speed gearshift)
- 18 inch children's bicycles are also a niche for about 5 years and up. Mustang plays the pioneering role here and offers the ideal transition and supplement to the 20-inch Children Bike . However, here too, most models are equipped with fewer gears than the youth bikes from the 20-inch segment
- 20 inch bikes are popular as a school bike or as a mountain bike and offer everything that the "big ones" also have to offer
- 24 inch youth bike are top equipped and are in no way inferior to the adult bikes. Again, you should make the distinction between a school bike or a mountain bike.
- 26 inches is usually no longer classified as a youth bike, whereby also here a models are quite well suited for children.

Unpack and assemble - check if everything is fit and screwed
You bought a new Children Bike ? Then it is only necessary to unpack and assemble the few non-pre-assembled parts. As a rule, this gives almost no effort, because with the small wheels, the pre-assembly is already done for you on a large scale. Often it is still necessary to pump the tires (wheels), to straighten the handlebar and to screw it firmly, to plug in the saddle and to attach desired small parts such as bells, reflectors or baskets. In most cases, this does not require any craftsman knowledge. Check whether the brakes are well adjusted and all screws are stuck.
What is mandatory regulated by law? Is that Children Bike set correctly and everything it needs?
Whether the bike is set correctly, you can determine whether your child comes with his feet on the ground and the arms can reach the handlebars well. The brake lever should also be child-friendly and at hand. In most models, a screw can be tightened to the brake lever, so that the brake bracket comes a little closer. After adjusting, please check the brakes again. On the first bike (up to about 16 inches), the chain should lie behind a closed chain guard so that your child can not injure himself. Handlebars with impact protection on the side protect the children's hands. Check the braking ability every now and then. It is regulated by law – that kids are not allowed to ride their bikes on the street until they are of compulsory school age (without the accompaniment of an adult) at the earliest. Therefore, small parent-child excursions (parent in front, child in the middle, parent in the back) with the bike on low-traffic paths are the ideal preparation - if traffic situations - and signs are just looked at on the way. Do not demand too much from your child, not that he is overwhelmed. Caution is especially important when turning left: prefer to descend and push, because even up to compulsory school age it is a great challenge for the kids to pay attention to everything. In order to give you an overview of the regulations, we have created an overview for you:
What is the best way to learn cycling?
With the right selection of the children's bike, of course, cycling is not yet learned. The first driving tests should take place on safe terrain without traffic. For this purpose, schoolhouse places, uncensled neighborhood streets, large parking lots that are empty on weekends or other uncensleed places are suitable. And it is best to get your child used to a perfectly fitting helmet at the first driving attempt (only a well-fitting helmet can protect you in the event of a fall, read our guide in our helmet overview). Use the preschool time to prepare your child well for road traffic and be a role model. Explain the road rules again and again in many small steps. As a newcomer, if your child has already been able to learn the balance thanks to the Balance Bike , we recommend that you do not mount the training wheels at all. Because not only you rely on the training wheels, but also the kids. They then quickly become cocky and lie in the curve – and it's already happened. The fall that shouldn't have been. At the same time, the kids unlearn the balance of Balance Bike again – which of course we don't want either. If the entry with the Balance Bike was missed, we recommend that you attach the training wheels only for a very short start-up time (about 2 months with a lot of driving experience) - and then accompany your child during the first driving tests without training wheels. Many children's bikes are already so cleverly equipped that the saddle has a recess for pushing and supporting for the parents. And it's like everything – the more exercise you have, the better you get. Bring a little patience and encourage your child for even the smallst progress. This is the only way he/she will enjoy driving.
Children Bike helmet size
In order to determine the exact value of your child, place a "sewing tape" or a string (which is then measured accordingly with the meter) over forehead height (about 2 finger widths over eyebrows) around the head - because this is how you determine the decisive head circumference. With us you have the possibility to filter directly according to the head circumference.
And how fast does the clever head grow that should be protected?
The age indication is purely informative and without guarantee and may vary from child to child. This information is used for overview and foreboding.
Does it have to be a well-known brand or a test winner and do you have to spend a lot of money on a Children Bike ?
2x No. However, it is recommended not to save too much in a Children Bike , because the more expensive models do not come by chance. If you value quality – you should also dig deeper into your pocket. Basically, you can also use a cheaper model for the first children's bike from 12-14 inches - as soon as the kids become raudies, a more expensive model pays off. Our assortment are almost exclusively specialist trade bikes. We have only a few discount models, where quality actually had to be saved for the price. And so, of course, we also have many award-winning models that have emerged as test winners from Children Bike tests. More about this in our blog. With our brand diversity, we offer you a wide selection for every taste.
What else should I pay attention to and where do I buy the Children Bike?
It is clearly advisable to be clear about what the bike is used for. It can be divided into two areas – namely, is it used for descents in the mountains or by a roughyman who also likes to cruise around in the forest? Then a mountain bike is recommended. A mountain bike can also be equipped with stands and mudguards. For the classic way to school, a fully equipped youth bike (street bike) is best with hub dynamo (with automatic light), a luggage rack and mudguards a good choice.
